Lonesome Road by Patricia Wentworth

This one kept me up late at night to find out the ending. Although I thought that it wasn't that hard to guess who the villain was in this book, there was still an unusual twist in the end, and the dangerous scene before that is described so suspensefully that it is sure to put chills up your spine!

The story involves wealthy heiress Rachel Traherne, whose father has left her a fortune. She puts this to good use by running the family business, which involves social housing, but most of her family isn't happy about her inheritance. Desperate and concerned that a family member is trying to kill her, she turns to Private Detective Miss Silver, who belies her considerable skills by knitting and quoting Tennyson. By this time, Rachel has almost slipped down highly polished stairs, and luckily failed to eat poisonous chocolates. Miss Silver decides to travel down to Rachel's house where she lives with her troublesome extended family, posing as an old governess, and that is where the fun really begins as poor Rachel avoids even more murder attempts. Who has designs on her life? Could it be her constantly worried sister Mabel, her proposal-making cousin or even the lovely Caroline? And who is the handsome American?

I read another Miss Silver novel years ago, and left it overseas. I really regret it now, and hope to read the others in sequence.

I finished this on December 30, 2022 for the TBR 22 for 2022 Rose City Reader Challenge.
