This is a sweet and easy readby Fenella J. Miller, set in country in England during the war. Lily, who acts a housekeeper at Harbour House, has struggled to bring her daughter Daphne up alone because her husband Patrick deserted them soon after they were married. when he turns up again, she and Daphne are quite shocked, and she has to work out her feelings for him as well as dealing with the war.

Emily, the daughter of the house, is growing up and precocious. A very responsible young girl, she has various issues to cope with too, such as her beloved grandfather’s illness and city children who have no one to care for them.

This was an enjoyable read, and I found the characters likeable but not really all that interesting.
