The Spy Who Betrayed The Treachery of Mathilde Carré, Codenamed 'The Cat' by Nigel Perrin
I love to read about the French Resistance but I usually read about the ‘good guys’. Mathilde Carre was not one of them! The only similar book that I’ve read is Priscilla by Nicholas Shakespeare but Mathilde was far worse than Priscilla. She started off very bravely, founding a large resistance group called Interallie but as soon as she was arrested, she decided to work for the Nazis, giving many of the froup away. Several went to concentration camps and some had terrible deaths. She did work for the Allies again but, despite eventually converting to Catholicism, you get the impression that she was just out for herself and she even somehow convinced herself that she was blameless!
It’s well-worth reading if you like true war tales, or spy stories. Nigel Perrin has certainly done his research and explores this woman in depth.
I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
