The Ways of the World by Robert Goddard
Although he is one of my favourite authors, some of Robert Goddard’s novels are quite formulaic, revolving around mysteries involving the mysterious deaths of family members and a series of adventures to pursue the truth. This one of them. In this one, James ‘Max’ Maxstead attempts to find out the reason for his father’s death. Sir Harry, a diplomat, apparently fell off his mistress’s apartment building in strange circumstances, and Max smells a rat when no one wants to investigate.
Discovering the truth takes Max on a whirlwind chase in Paris and beyond as he tries to deal with shadowy intelligence and government figures and death threats. He forms attachments to beautiful women, but can they be trusted? Where do the Russians fit in? Who are the real enemies?
I really enjoyed this but it is going back to the Little Library along the road. Now for the third one in the trilogy.
My favourite Robert Goddard novel is, of course, the wonderful Past Caring. I still have my battered and much-beloved copy, which I bought forty years ago! Mum also loved it.
I read this for Rose City Reader’s TBR 26 in ‘26 Challenge.
