I Shop, Therefore I am The '90s, Harvey Nicks – and Me by Mary Portas

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in the heady days of the Nineties fashion scene, or readers interested in working in the creative field in retail. Written in a breathless style, this book takes you right into behind-the-scenes life at Harvey Nichols, and how Mary transformed it from a store where daughters were dragged at Christmas by their mothers to the heart of the exclusive, glamorous fashion world. Her creative ideas were amazing, including windows that stopped traffic, Absolutely Fabulous and a luxury magazine. At one stage, she had super-model Linda Evangelista being photographed in the window! Another idea was windows with signs saying that the store was donating the money that they would have spent on the windows to charity.

Even more amazing, is Mary’s own transformation from enduring a tragic adolescence to a stellar career in a highly competitive creative field, as well as having a long marriage and two children.

Several celebrities are mentioned in this gossipy, witty book. It’s hugely enjoyable.

I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
