The War Correspondents The Incredible Stories of the Brave Men and Women Who Covered the Fight Against Hitler's Germany by Keith Warren Lloyd
There’s the hard-drinking, heavy-smoking, handsome photographer, Robert Capa, who was kicked out of the Dorchester for taking too many beautiful young woman to his room, the beautiful Martha Gellhorn who wanted to be where ‘history was happening,’ and Ernie Pyle, who John Steinbeck called ‘the best and sweetest of them all’. These are just some of the fascinating characters described in this book, which is really not only a story about war correspondents, but also a detailed account of many of the big war campaigns, such as the hellish invasion of Italy and the incredibly difficult battles there. Having been to Rome, Anzio and Nettuno, I was especially interested in that part of the book.
There’s so much in this book that it’s worth reding a second time. Anyone who is interested in the war and war correspondents will enjoy it. I really didn’t think that women such as Lee Miller were given as much time as the men here, though. However, it is an impressive and very thoroughly-researched book.
I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
