The Conditions of Unconditional Love: An Isabel Dalhousie Novel (15)

I love this series and Mum used to love it too! I’ve only read three of the African series, although that’s enjoyable and the books are somewhat more exciting. These are philosophical and meandering but Isabel is a lovely character and they give you much to think about. I also like the Edinburgh setting.

Isabel has a lot on her plate in this one, including a professor’s extremely high financial demands, a disputatious book club and a mysterious houseguest. Isabel solves each one calmly and slowly, even though she edits a magazine and has two young children. She also has her annoying niece Cat and her boyfriend Gordon to contend with.

Isabel’s philosophical meanderings are always interesting. I also enjoyed the info about Scottish songs in this novel and I mean to look them up.

I am grateful to Alexander MacCall-Smith for a relaxing read.

I read this paperback for the Rose City Reader TBR 25 in ‘25 challenge.
