Reviews of Jude the Obscure and The Mayor of Casterbridge Soon
I hope to review these two books by Thomas Hardy soon. I read most of Hardy’s books years ago, and studied Tess of the D’Urbervilles at university.
There’s been a lot of fuss lately about Hardy’s being a misogynist. He was in his private life, but, arguably, his books were really unusually sympathetic to women for his time. It’s an interesting question. Arguably, if you cut out all of the classics written by men considered to be misogynists now, you’d be left with almost none!
