Lock Her Up by Elizabeth Searle
This wasn’t really my kind of novel, and I found it fairly unbelievable, so I just skimmed it in the end. The dramatic beginning when Sylvie is arrested pulls you in, but I got a bit tired of the book mid-way through, and practically leafed through it after that. Sylvie and Wally stay with his brother Hal, his wife Sharon and their children in a ‘redneck’ county during Covid. Hal hates Sylvie, because he regards her as a moneyed feminist who voted for Hilary, and he thinks that she looks down on his family. Sharon seems to have more complex attitudes towards her. They are being blackmailed by Troy, a drug-dealer, and ‘hit’ on Sylvie for money. The situation rapidly descends into hell, and Sylvie finds herself in her worst nightmare.
It’s written in a ‘cool,’ fast-paced, action-packed, punchy style, suitable for ‘hard-boiled’ American thrillers, and extremely political. I just don’t like that kind of writing, but I’m sure that it will be really popular.
I received this free ebook from Edelweiss in return for an honest review.
