The Power of Style Christian Allaire
Christian Allaire loves fashion, but when he grew up he rarely saw his own Ojibwe people represented in
magazines or movies. As a successful fashion journalist, he decided to write this book to explore the fashion and style of people of different cultures and communities, including Indigeneous designers, cosplayers and people struggling with whether to straighten their hair. (I can strongly identify with the last one). There is also a Muslim designer who makes beautiful hijabs.
Filled with interesting stories, it also contains gorgeous, colourful photos. I especially liked the exquisite ribbon work of Bethany Yellowtail,
a Crow and Northern Cheyenne designer. This book will make you think about your own culture and how you can express that in fashion, or your own relationship to fashion and style.
