In 1940, Nell finds herself forced to escape with her daughter Alice from a London suffering from the ravages of the Blitz to her mother's house in the country. Here she learns that her beloved husband, Arthur, a clockmaker, who works on Big Ben, is in prison, which is very puzzling. Nell goes back to London, to try to help her husband, and finds herself in the middle of a plot which could bring down the country. Will she be too late?

This beautifully-written story will keep you at night, feeling that you are in the middle of the Blitz with Nell in a race against time! The descriptions of the bombs falling on London, and the fires is so colourful and vivid, that it is easy to picture it all. I loved this book, and I was really sorry to finish it.
